Dr. Joseph Hibbeln, lead clinical investigator at the National Institutes of Public Health and internationally recognized authority on the link between essential fatty acids and depression, claims that, although a deficiency of omega-3 fatty acids often results in flaky skin, a “flaky brain” is probably a more significant hazard. Because omega-3s make up much of the brain, inadequate intake can result in impaired neurodevelopment, depression and other mental health problems. He spoke at the Integrative Mental Health Conference in Phoenix, Ariz. on March 23, 2010.
